habitats will be restored. The project will Increase
tidal flows by removing approximately .27 acre of
invasive exotic species and dredge spoil along a
994ft. canal bank and by installing four culverts
under an existing 534 ft. X 12ft. roadway.
Project Summary:
Restore historic tidal connections and flows to
approximately 32 acres of saltmarsh and mangrove
habitats in the Lemon Bay watershed (a GEMS site).
Provide volunteer training and program leaders for
educational wading trips. Provide permanent
environmental education displays in the state park and
outreach at local schools.
Need for Project:
The project will increase tidal exchange on a
north/south continuum with the waters of Lemon Bay, a
state aquatic preserve and a portion of the Charlotte
Harbor National Estuary focus area. The project is
within a state park and is part of a larger effort to
restore the previously disturbed area to its natural
condition and function. The project will also provide
public environmental education through interpretive
signage and escorted wading trips in Lemon Bay.
