Acres of Habitat To be Restored: Approximately 32 acres of saltmarsh and mangrove habitats will be restored. The project will Increase tidal flows by removing approximately .27 acre of invasive exotic species and dredge spoil along a 994ft. canal bank and by installing four culverts under an existing 534 ft. X 12ft. roadway.

Project Summary:
Restore historic tidal connections and flows to approximately 32 acres of saltmarsh and mangrove habitats in the Lemon Bay watershed (a GEMS site). Provide volunteer training and program leaders for educational wading trips. Provide permanent environmental education displays in the state park and outreach at local schools.

Need for Project:
The project will increase tidal exchange on a north/south continuum with the waters of Lemon Bay, a state aquatic preserve and a portion of the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary focus area. The project is within a state park and is part of a larger effort to restore the previously disturbed area to its natural condition and function. The project will also provide public environmental education through interpretive signage and escorted wading trips in Lemon Bay.

Community Involvement:
The Barrier Islands Park Society, the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center and their volunteers will provide educational materials and park volunteers will be trained to do interpretive programs related to estuarine systems and functions. Near shore wading trips will also be conducted by park staff, environmental center trainers and volunteers for area elementary, middle and high school groups.
